Whitney A. Young is an associate attorney, with a general civil practice operating primarily out of our Elizabeth City office. While Whitney's practice includes many areas of the law, her main areas are family law and Social Security Disability appeals.
Whitney holds a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Appalachian State University, where she graduated in 2009 as a North Carolina Teaching Fellow and Honors Student Teacher. After graduation, Whitney moved to Elizabeth City to begin her teaching career at River Road Middle School. Three years later, Whitney moved on to teach high school for a year before entering law school in the Fall of 2013.
During her law school career, Whitney enjoyed various internships, beginning briefly with our local District Attorney's office, where she participated in district and superior criminal court. Whitney next interned with the U.S. Army JAG Corps of Fort Wainwright, Alaska, where her husband, Steven Young (now retired), was stationed at the time. During her time with JAG, Whitney served retired and active duty soldiers in the legal assistance office, studied under prosecutors and observed several courts martial, and clerked with the administrative law office.
During her second year of law school, Whitney interned with local attorney Rachel S. Gunther of the Gunther Law Group in Hertford, where she assisted in representing clients regarding divorce, equitable distribution, spousal support, child custody, child support, estate planning, and real estate closings. That same year, Whitney earned an Academic Achievement Award in Family Law from Regent University School of Law. Whitney then joined The Twiford Law Firm in the summer of 2015.
When Whitney is not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Steven, stepdaughter, Elena, and son Sylas.
As a product of divorced parents, a military spouse, and a stepparent, Whitney's personal experience combined with her work experience makes her a unique asset to our domestic law team.
